LUKE 6:27-29

“But to you who are listening I say: Love your enemies, do good to those who hate you, 28 bless those who curse you, pray for those who mistreat you. 29 If someone slaps you on one cheek, turn to them the other also. If someone takes your coat, do not withhold your shirt from them.”

I was sitting in the backseat of a car on my way to Yankee Stadium, listening to the meandering conversation happening in the front seat. Suddenly, the conversation turned serious, and I felt like I was overhearing a private discussion I wasn't invited to join.

The man driving shared his experiences with several church relationships that had left him feeling wounded and scarred. Unexpectantly, there was a deafening silence. He then said, “God knows that I only have the capacity to love one enemy at a time. Everyone else, I just have to forgive and move on from."

I’ll never forget that statement. God knew I desperately needed to hear that truth at that exact moment. It resonated deeply: I can only love and pray for one enemy at a time. That’s my limit.

What about you? How many enemies do you have right now? How many people do you hold hurt and bitterness against? Let go of all your other grudges and ask God to help you find the capacity to love that one enemy.
